Remembering Miss Sadie:
I received the very sad news last week that a good friend had died.  We corresponded although we never met.  She could, give or take a few years, have been my daughter.

She was a constant source of support and encouragement.  She is the only person I know who regularly read my column on the internet.  She never missed a posting and she went back and read all the way through the “Wild Surmises” site as well.  She was brave in the face of great difficulties.

Her name was actually “Peggy,” but she preferred “Sadie.”  In recent months I had begun to call her “Bestie” as in best friend, a notion from the show “Big Bang Theory,” but really I should have said, “Onlie.”  There will not be another like her.

There always seems to be something amiss when the younger dies first.  I do not consider myself to be a teacher; I am only another searcher exploring a different question.  But she did have the enthusiasm of a student.  And I think it is worse when the only student dies before the only teacher.

I shall miss her terribly.
